Earthquakes and strong aftershocks within 24 hours in Indonesia has put the region on tenterhooks for fear of a tsunami or even stronger jolts.

The first quake on Wednesday evening set off tremors in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as well as tsunami alerts as far away as Africa. A second quake that led to tremors being reported by people in several parts of Singapore came at about 8am Thursday.

Another round of tremors were reported at about 12.20am Friday morning after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake was detected at 12.09am in southern Sumatra, approximately 640 kilometers from Singapore.

The Police and SCDF had received about 500 calls from the public about the tremors.

The National Environment Agency said the fresh tremors in Singapore were a result of an 8.3-magnitude earthquake at about 7.45 am in southern Sumatra, approximately 600km from Singapore. This followed a major quake in the same area a day earlier.

Singapore police say there is no cause for alarm and that buildings should be evacuated only when there are visible signs of structural defects on building elements.

Residents or those in public estates can call HDB's Essential Maintenance Service Unit's 24-hour hotline at 6275 5555 and 6354 3333, while those in private buildings could call BCA at 6325 7720 during office hours.

Indonesia which sits in an active quake zone has been hit regularly by devastating earthquakes since 2004.
